How To Create “SpaceShip”, "Star Wars", “Flying Objects”, or
“Galaxy-like” types of sounds!
Introduction:
I am sure you heard of these types of piano sound effects often in movies or
theatres. They sound mysterious, “spooky” or even thrilling. You know what?
They are so easy to create!
In case you don’t know what I am talking about, listen to this! “Listen”
I am going to show you how to make up these effects in three steps! Once you
know it, you can show off to any of your friends or relatives!
Are you ready?
This is the first step:
1. Locate any of the three black notes on the piano/keyboard (F#, G#, and A#,
group A), also, find C, D, and E notes (group B)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->
Are you able to find them? Now, you will play these notes from the bottom up.
Start with F# , G#, A#, then C, D, E.
Listen to “audio file”
Tip: Left hand 4, 3, 2 fingers play F#, G#, and A# respectively. Right hand 1, 2, 3
fingers play C, D, E respectively.
2. Pick one note from group A and one note from group B and play them
interchangeably. You can pick any note in any order and they will sound perfectly
find when you mix group A and group B together.
Listen to “audio file”
3. You will repeat first step except this time you will play the group in the reverse
order. You will play group B (E, D, C) and group A (A#, G#, and F#) from high to
low.
Listen to “audio”
<--------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Now combine all three steps!
Bravo! You have just created the “galaxy-like” sound effects!
Tip:
There is a theory behind this type of sound effect, it is called the tritone or all
whole-step notes. Do you know these notes are a whole step (whole-tone) apart
from each other? Many of the 20th centuries repertoire used this type of
combination!
