The plagal cadence.

So what exactly is a plagal cadence? Chances are you have heard it but did not know its name. If you have attended worship services, then you have heard many hymns that end with the phrase - Amen.

Yes, Amen ending is a perfect example of the plagal cadence.

The plagal cadence: I    IV   I
 
Just in case you don't know what the plagal cadence is for the key of C major:
It is:  C maj chord   F maj chord    C maj chord
(C is the tonic (I), and F is the subdominant  (IV) of C major).
